The 12 Makeup Products I Take on A Summer Holiday

Deciding what to pack is one of my least favourite parts about going on holiday! No matter how many lists I write, I still seem to pack way too many outfits and forget my travel adapter.

However one part of my packing that I totally have nailed now, is makeup. For years, half of my checked luggage was makeup, it was obscene. When I was then on holiday, sunning myself and drinking cocktails like my life depended on it, I only used a handful of the products I'd lugged across the sea.

This got me thinking "what do I actually use when I'm away?" and so I've whittled my summer holiday makeup bag down to 12 products that I can use to create a natural daytime look or a going out-out evening look! Keep reading to find out which products made the cut...

1. Primer

To avoid having too heavy of a base when you're in the heat, pack a primer spray such as MAC's Prep & Prime Fix+ or Too Faced's Hangover 3-in-1. These not only hydrate and prep your skin for makeup, but also double up as a setting spray! I adore both of these and if you are travelling hand luggage only, both have an under 100ml size too!

2. Foundation

You want a lightweight, sweat-proof foundation when it comes to summer holiday looks. For me, Too Faced’s Born This Way foundation is perfect! I apply just a light layer to my skin, and blend using either a damp beauty blender or my fingertips for a flawless finish. You can read my more in depth review of the Born This Way foundation here! I also love using the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation; this is a your skin but better type of finish and lasts all night long.

3. Concealer

As with the primer and foundation, you'll want to avoid any heavy duty concealers or your makeup could end up looking cakey! My go to is the Urban Decay Naked Weightless concealer. It is super easy to blend, looks natural and is long lasting with minimal creasing. If you need just a little more coverage, try the Maybelline Eye Eraser concealer!

4. Powder

I don't feel like you need a lot of powder when on your summer holidays, so I would recommend using a loose powder to just set your concealer and only using it later in your routine if you feel your foundation needs a little extra hold. You can always use your setting spray later to melt everything together! The Laura Mercier Translucent loose setting powder is my ride-or-die, but lately I've also been loving the Revolution Pro loose powder in lace; the light pink shade is perfect for brightening your under eye!

5. Blush

I am really in to using a cream blush at the moment, as it gives you a more natural, glowing finish. I find the best application is to apply a little to the back of your hand, warm it up and tap it on with your fingers or a beauty blender. I am 10/10 in love with the Nars The Multiple in their cult shade Orgasm. It makes your skin look radiant!

6. Highlight

I talked in a post last year about how I love to apply a powder highlight with a damp beauty blender. I still love to do this, but I’ve also fallen in love with using a liquid or cream highlighter too. They really give your skin that lit from within vibe and are so easy to build (I know y’all like your highlight to be seen from space!). Obsessed with Milk Makeup’s Highlighter Stick!

7. Bronzer

Bronzer is the perfect product to top up your natural tan and do some light contouring. My favourites this summer have been the Becca Sunlit bronzer in the shade Capri Coast and Benefit's Hoola bronzer in Caramel. They give a gorgeous warm glow to the skin, and also double up as beautiful eyeshadows, perfect for a quick 5 minute routine!

8. Eyeshadow

For eyeshadow, your best bet is to take a palette with quite neutral colours so that it will easily pair with each outfit, like the Revolution Pro Earth & Stone palette. It is a gorgeous mix of bronzey browns. You can use the black for a smoked out eyeliner, the light pink to highlight your brow bone and inner corner, and on a night out use the yellow and green for a more daring look! Bright eyeshadow colours can also look amazing on summer nights, but stick to neutrals if you are not too confident at creating a bold look!

9. Lashes

I’m not the biggest fan of wearing loads of mascara on a summer holiday, as it always seems to transfer, however I don’t want my eyes to get lost on my face so my go to are strip lashes. It took me a little while to get used to applying them, but they are perfect for adding extra glam to your evening look and they last all night long. My favourite brand has always been Eylure, I’ve worn them since I was a teenager. They are super affordable, can be used multiple times and are excellent quality. Once applied, I use just a little mascara to fuse my own lashes with the falsies!

10. Eyebrows

My absolute go-to brow products right now are the NYX Micro Brow Pencil in Espresso and the Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel. For the day, just a little bit of the clear brow gel sets my eyebrows in place and then for the evening, I fill in and shape with the brow pencil. I used Benefit’s Precisely My Brow for quite some time but a friend put me on to the NYX dupe and my bank balance is hella happy!

11. Lipstick

For holiday, I’ve grown to like an easy to apply lip colour. I don’t want anything too bright or too bold, just a simple nude shade so it won’t matter if a little comes off. My ride-or-die is Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk but I also love the texture of the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams. They feel so hydrating, the shade range is beautiful and they are so quick and easy to apply. At £6.00 a pop, you can’t go wrong!

12. Nail Polish

At home, I tend to just stick to a nude or pale pink nail polish, but when on holiday, I love a bright colour. A hot pink or gorgeous coral is my go to; my current favourites shades are Essie's Watermelon and Tart Deco. Both look fab with a tan and once I've applied Essie's top coat, my nails look glossy and new until my holiday is over!
