How To Care for Your Skin in the Sun

The weather has been glorious in the UK this week, and as we enjoy the sunshine, I thought I'd put together a quick post on looking after your skin... Keep reading to find out my favourite products for not only protecting my skin in the sun, but also for boosting my tan and keeping my skin healthy and happy!

Prep!

Hydration, as well as SPF, is key to happy, healthy skin in the summertime. Make sure to drink plenty of water, as well as eating water-packed foods like watermelon, cucumber, and strawberries. Your skin will thank you for it!

If I know that I am going to be sunbathing, I also like to make sure that my skin is clean and dry, before applying any products.

Face...

We should wear SPF on our faces every day, but especially when we are going to be sat in the sun. My favourite moisturiser is The Body Shop Vitamin E Cream and finding out last summer that it also comes in an SPF 30 formula was a dream!

I've previously used facial sunscreens (the ones that you'll find under the Suncare tab and not the Skincare one) but I found that they were too oily and often made my skin breakout.

I'd definitely recommend The Body Shop Vitamin E Day Lotion; it's lightweight, doesn't leave a residue on the skin, and of course, provides excellent protection from the sun!

When applying your sunscreen, make sure to get your ears!

I don't tend to wear any base make-up when in the sun, but if you are not a bare-faced fan and want a little coverage, give Bali Body's BB Cream* a go. It has SPF 15 and gives you a glowing complexion.

Often people forget to apply an SPF to their lips, and with the skin being very delicate, this area of your face can so easily burn. I love Bali Body's Coconut Lip Balm*; it contains SPF 15, smells like coconut heaven and gives your lips a natural glossy look with a little plumpness too! You can also apply it straight from the tube, so no sticky fingers!

Don't forget your sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun's rays!

Body...

If you know me well, you'll know that one of my favourite things about summer (and the thing I always buy in the airport if I'm hand luggage only!) is Piz Buin Sun Lotion. I LOVE the smell and it's the one sunscreen I've used that doesn't seem to stain my clothing or break up on my skin throughout the day.

I tend to use the Piz Buin 1 Day Long Lasting Sun Lotion with SPF 30. I apply it in the morning, knowing that I will be protected all day and don't need to re-apply.

Don't forget to put sunscreen on your feet! I see so many people forget to do this, walk around in their sandals, and end up with feet looking like Squashies!

Whilst the Piz Buin Lotion is my favourite, I can also recommend the Riemann P20 sunscreen which is perfect for a day of hiking, swimming or exploring. It soaks in to the skin quickly, and is very water resistant so ideal for applying in the morning and not worrying throughout your day of activity!

I also love the Garnier Ambre Solaire UV Water Clear Spray in SPF 20; it is enriched with aloe vera so is super hydrating, and leaves no residue on the skin.

Top tip! When the Sun is at it's highest and most powerful, stay in the shade!

How To Care for Your Skin in the Sun

For a Deeper Tan...

I'd be lying if I said I didn't love having a tan, especially in the summer, so even though protecting my skin from the sun's rays is important, I do also like to use products that will ensure I get a gorgeous, golden glow!

For the areas of my body that don't tan as fast, I love using Bali Body's Watermelon Tanning Oil*. It does contain SPF 15, but if the sun is very strong, I will mix this with the likes of the Ambre Solaire spray, just for a little added protection!

You could also try the Piz Buin Tan & Protect Accelerating Oil Spray or Tan Intensifying Sun Lotion; both come with SPF and again, smell amazing! (I'm all about the nice smelling sun care, if you couldn't tell already!)

Post-Sunbathe...

After a day in the sun, I like to use a moisturising shower cream like the Nivea Indulgent Moisture Coconut Shower Cream, and I make sure to not use anything too harsh on my skin, such as a body scrub or exfoliating mitt.

You may find that your hair is a little dry after sunbathing, so make sure to use a mask like Coco & Eve's Super Nourishing Coconut & Fig Hair Masque to keep your hair hydrated and frizz-free!

Moisturise...

When it comes to body moisturiser, if I need a good amount of hydration, my go-to is the Nivea Soft Moisture Cream (the one in the tub!) but if you are a little sunburnt or find you've accidentally missed a spot when applying your sun cream, the Banana Boat Soothing Aloe After Sun Gel is a dream!

For my tan lovers, try the Piz Buin Tan Intensifying After Sun Moisturising Lotion!

A year or so ago, I attended a fab event for the Forever Living Sonya Skincare Range*, and one of the products has been my go-to overnight mask for when my skin has had a little too much sun. The Refining Gel Mask works absolute wonders, rich in aloe vera it calms the skin and I wake up with a fresh, sunkissed complexion!

I am also a huge fan of sheet masks, and I recently tried the Ambre Solaire After Sun Cooling Hyaluronic Acid Face Sheet Mask after a day of sunbathing and I am in love! These will definitely be in my suitcase next time I go on a beach holiday!

I hope this post has been helpful, remember to bookmark it for when you book your next holiday in the sun!
